A Brief Chronology of Events at Oran Mór

Jump to end

May 2003
Six founding members purchased 110 acres in Ozark County, MO. This land was fairly cheap because it included the ruins of a burned-down three-story house.

Some may consider it an eyesore; we consider it a resource.
July 2003
Four of the founders took up residence. A fifty foot trailer house ("Celesteville") was acquired. Work began on retrofitting the garage (dubbed "The Catbox") for housing.

Bunny went to Texas to pick up a new diesel truck. Judy and her son Danny came from Ithaca for a brief internship. They vowed to return next year!

Unfortunately, Bunny was stranded in Texas and missed their long-anticipated visit.
July 2005
Another intern, Annie, helped Pearl with the farm work. She found us through WWOOF-USA.

Bunny arrived home in Hearne, a 1989 Ford F-250 4WD diesel flatbed, toward the end of Annie's visit.
August 2005

Bunny converted Hearne to run on vegetable oil, using some parts salvaged from Friar Truck.

September 2005
David, later known as Moss, late of Acorn Community, stayed for a brief internship.
October 2005
We adopted Lazarus a half Great Pyrenees/half mutt to be our goat guard dog.
Ah! The sweet smell of success! Lazarus just chillin a dog and his herd

November 2005
Bunny got a job! Auto repairs busted our budget, so the extra income was needed, at least temporarily.
December 2005
Yet another David arrived for an extended internship.

He has lots of knowledge about green building and home power generation, and even set us up with a solar power system for the Catbox. 300 watts worth

We acquired another Mercedes-Benz 300 TD!

This one is a 1984. Maybe between the two of them we can construct one reliable car . . .
February 2006
Bunny quit workin' for the man! The stress, the commute, the lack of time to work at home—it just wasn't worth the money.

Six kids were born toward the end of the month, with more to come.

March 2006
Seven more kids were born, for a total of thirteen this spring. The does are producing around fifty pounds of milk every day! Pearl begins making cheddar cheese. We planted three hundred trees: persimmons, black walnuts, pecans, red mulberries, elderberries, redbuds and witch hazels.
April 2006
April fool Bunny tripped over a piece of wood in Kid-R-Garden, fractured his femur, as simple as that.

Then he got some new hardware installed . . .

. . . stainless steel, that is.

A new visitor, Joe, arrived. His help was much appreciated in a difficult time, but alas, he had other places to go.

Yet another visitor, a godsend from WWOOF-USA, named Skyenne payed us a visit and helped for a while.
a gal named Skye

May 2006
Bunny was walking and almost fully recovered from his injury.

David departed to prepare for his trip to Puerto Rico. We're not sure when he'll be back.

Travis, another WWOOFer, stayed for a while and helped tremendously.

June 2006
Travis was homesick for Zendik Farm so he's outta here! We miss hanging out with him.
July 2006
We got another WWOOFer for a brief stay. Heather helped Pearl with construction of a solar food dehydrator.

August 2006

Oliver, a.k.a. Chef, a.k.a. OK arrived for an internship. He helped us out with drywall spackling and painting.

September 2006

After many trials and tribulations, Grace arrived for an internship.

Oliver took a trip to Sandhill Farm.

October 2006

Oliver returned and became a provisional member.

Grace departed, more visitors arrived to lend a hand: JT and Richard.

Pearl took a trip to Iowa to visit her family, leaving OM to the tender mercies of three males.

JT and Richard left before Pearl's return.

November 2006

Pearl returned, with Katya, a friend of OK, in tow.

December 2006

We planted a few dozen cherry trees generously donated.

Katya left to go to massage school in Virginia, vowing to return in August.

Later OK took a trip to visit Katya.

January 2007

Pearl traveled with two friends to Kansas City for a “Coming Home to Eat” conference. When she came back she made lots of birdhouses.

February 2007

Pearl and Bunny continued to struggle through the exceptionally cold winter.

Hearne's fuel system finally gave out completely. After installing a new injector pump at great expense, she ran both fine and dandy.

March 2007

Another visitor interested in membership, Seth, arrived for a one-week stay, from Alaska.

Shortly thereafter, Oliver returned from his adventures back east.

We planted a little over one hundred trees and shrubs, mostly pecans, false indigo, dogwoods, and spice bushes, twenty-five of each. We also planted a few sand cherries and Manchurian apricots. Help from a crew of East Winders was much appreciated.

Bunny started keeping a blog, in response to David's suggestion that some people might appreciate an account of everyday life at OM.

April 2007

Pearl and Oliver began work on building a duck house. (to house our ducks)

May 2007

Tragically, Hearne's new (rebuilt) injector pump seized up on the highway, leaving Bunny stranded. The company that warranteed it claimed that it failed due to fuel contamination, so they would not replace it. Thus we had little choice but to buy a new one. Figuring what went wrong with our fuel filtration system became a high priority.

June 2007

We had the pleasure of a brief internship with Mike from Minnesota. (late of the Navajo reservation) He was a lot of help with our first goat slaughter. Pearl's son, Jesse, and his daughter, Isis also came for a visit on the Solstice.

July 2007

We got another slew of WWOOFers, Crystal and Daniel from Arizona; and Alex and Travis from California. They all stayed about a week, then Seth came back for an ostensibly longer stay, but decided OM was not for him, so he left at the end of the month to go to Ohio. Oliver took a trip to Virginia, to visit Katya and to represent OM at the FEC meeting in August.

August 2007

Oliver is missing in action. He got to TO but never made it to the FEC Assembly.

September 2007

Bunny began training as an Emergency Medical Technician. We had a visit from Bennet, who is an associate at EW.

October 2007

We had a great week's visit from our friend Tess, whom we hadn't seen in about seven years. She helped us with the drywall in the Catbox, and vowed to return in the spring. Later we got a visit from Miles of Pittsburgh. Miles gave us a big hand with the painting.

November 2007

Bunny graduated from EMT class. He also joined the volunteer fire department as a first responder.

December 2007

Miles departed for points west. Bunny passed the NREMT practical examination. Pearl took a trip to Iowa to visit her mother, leaving Bunny all alone with the four-legged people.

January 2008

Pearl returned from Iowa, then we got a visit from a couple, Alex & Aaron, from Indiana. They had to leave after five days to attend to a family crisis. Bunny passed the NREMT cognitive examination, which qualified him to receive his Missouri EMT license. Richard, who had visited in October of 2006, paid us another visit. While Richard was still here, David returned to resume his provisional membership.

February 2008

David began working on wiring up the Catbox, mostly for lighting. Richard headed back to EW. David took a brief trip to NYC. Five kids were born. Pearl attended the FEC Assembly at EW and talked to Oliver about his mysterious disappearance.

March 2008

We decided to build an earthship in Lalomah. A sixth kid was born. We planted 25 each of elderberries, paw paws, and hazelnuts, and 35 pecans.

April 2008

Digging commenced on our earthship, dubbed Foryu. Pearl and Bunny became official storm spotters for the National Weather Service. A guy from the Netherlands named Menno paid us a visit, helped out a lot with spring garden preparations.

May 2008

Ellie from Tennessee arrived for a brief internship. She helped out lots in the garden and donated a bunch of books to our library. Menno departed for Mammoth Cave. Bunny secured employment as an EMT-B in West Plains (63 miles away!)
